THE UGLY SIDE OF GONORRHEA



Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It tends to infect warm, moist areas of the body, including the urethra, eyes, throat, vagina, anus, the fallopian tubes, cervix and uterus. Gonorrhea is one of the oldest known sexually transmitted diseases.

HOW GONORRHEA IS TRANSMITTED
Gonorrhea is transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth or anus of an infected person. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child through childbirth. People who have too many sex partners and unprotected sex are at higher risk.

INCUBATION PERIOD
The days that gonorrhea take to show up differ from person to person due to many factors. These factors include the strength of their immune system or whether or not the gonorrhea strain is resistant to antibiotics. The symptoms of gonorrhea normally show up between 2 to 14 days with most of the symptoms appearing between 3 to 6 days after infection.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSThe signs and symptoms of males differ a bit from that of females.

MALES
1. White, yellow or green urethral discharge.
2. Pain in the testicles or scrotum.
3. Painful and frequent urination.
4. Anal discharge, itching, pain, bleeding or difficult defecating.

WOMEN
1. Painful sexual intercourse.
2. Yellow or green vaginal discharge.
3. Vulvar swelling
4. Anal discharge, itching, pain, bleeding or difficult defecating.
5. Vomitting and abdominal or pelvic pain.

TREATMENT FOR GONORRHEA

Gonorrhea can be cured by antibiotics. Your doctor will likely prescribe two antibiotic; ceftriaxone used as an injection, and azithromycin which is a tablet that you can take orally. Other antibiotics include; doxycycline, gemifloxacin, gentamicin and etc.

PREVENTION OF GONORRHEA

There are several ways one can avoid the crisis of being infected with gonorrhea.
1. Abstain from sexual intercourse.
2. Have only one sexual partner who is not infected and also monogamous.
3. use condom during sexual intercourse either vaginal or anal sex.
4. Use dental dams when practicing oral sex.
5. Get tested regularly.

RISKS OF NOT GETTING TREATED

If you don't see a doctor and get treatment for gonorrhea, you increase your risk for serious health condition. Examples;
1. It can cause infertility in both males and females.
2. It can increase your risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
3. It can increase the risk of blindness, sores on the scalp and other infections in your baby.
